The pictures below give an idea of the kind of commercial work undertaken.

On a construction site in the Middleton (Milton Keynes
Village) grid square, off H7 Chaffron Way.
The contractor needed the office (a reconditioned metal shipping container?) wired up to the generator. |
| It's a fact of life that things wear out.
Here at a local Methodist chapel, an outside light is being repaired. |

On large projects, it's usual practice to carry out the
electrical work in two phases. In the first fix, wires are fitted
prior to work on walls, ceilings, floors, etc., being carried out.
Once the fabric of the building has been carried out, the electricians return to carry out the second fix, where switches, sockets, light fittings, etc., are fitted. The picture shows the first fix at a respite care premises in Aylesbury owned by Buckingham County Council as part of a renovation project.

Periodic Inspection and PAT inspection at an engineering
company in Buckingham.
Here, a milling machine is undergoing PAT inspection. The earth continuity is being measured between the machine itself and the tapping-in point on the overhead 3-phase busbar. Under the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), there is a legal duty to ensure that the electrical installation is safe and fit for purpose. The inspection of the electrical installation is known as a Periodic Inspection. It should be carried out regularly, typically every year in high-risk areas, 3-5 years in ordinary commercial premises or 10 years in homes. Insurance companies usually ask the if the electrical installation is in a good state of repair, and will insist on there being an official Periodic Inspection certificate. |

How many electricians does it take to change a lightbulb?
In situations such as these, it's worthwhile changing all the lightbulbs. If one has failed, the others are likely to be about to fail. Furthermore, the luminous efficiency will probably have decreased as they near the end of their operational life. This co-called Maintenance Factor measures the drop in light output of a lightbulb, and is commonly as much as 30%. It's usually better to install more expensive lighting systems so that the lightbulbs last longer and have good maintenance factors. The cost of replacing them (and renting access an access tower) is thus spread over a longer period. |

Power, voice and data installation at offices at Eastlake,
Milton Keynes.
25 floor units were installed on two floors of this new office block. The photo shows CAT 5e cables being terminated prior to the assembly being mounted in the floor unit. The cables, 100 in all, go to a central patch panel where they are then linked to either the LAN router or the PABX. |

A PAT inspection checks that all electrical appliances are
safe to be used. The picture shows appliances in a church hall being tested.
The PAT inspection checks: the quality of the earth connection, the quality of the electrical insulation, for signs of damage and wear. A record of appliances tested and the measurements taken must also be provided. Under the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974), there is a legal duty to ensure that all appliances are safe and fit for purpose. |

Replacing a control switch on heavy-duty bandsaw
The Buckingham-based customer makes fibreglass bodies for Formula 1 racing cars. The bandsaw was temperamental and the problem was traced to the control switch. The contacts within had become badly pitted resulting in high-resistance. Nash Electric sourced a replacement part. The picture shows it being fitted to the control panel. |

Raising the tone
Nash Electric installed 3-phase heavy current supplies for battery charger and bailers at this print toner recycling depot. Spent toner cartridges from a leading computer retailer are aggregated here before being sent away for processing. Nash Electric also installed data cabling and termination. |
